Momoka U. received a GOLD medal from the Congressional Award!

Sandy Ridge Campus

We are proud to announce that Coral Academy Sandy Ridge student Momoka U. has recently been honored with a GOLD medal from the Congressional Award.

Her volunteering experience consisted of a project of creating homemade masks for under-resourced communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As disposable masks need to be thrown away after a single use, they cause inconvenience when they are not readily available. This inspired her to create reusable masks for communities in need. Upon researching non-profit organizations, she found three organizations that would serve as providers to distribute the masks to the families. With this, she got to work in learning what type of mask would best fit both children and adults. After multiple trial-and-errors, she found the exact measurements for both the cloth and ear straps that would securely cover the face. With her mother’s sewing machine and watching youtube tutorials endlessly, she began creating the face masks. With school temporarily shut down, she was able to work for a total of 380 hours making 732 homemade masks for over 100+ families.

This experience not only surfaced her enjoyment in engaging in textile crafts, but also taught her the significance of initiative. This experience directly connected to hosting in-person sessions in the Clark County Community, teaching 15+ students how to sew masks by hand; this consisted of a total of 18 hours. For her remaining 17 hours, she assisted as a teacher-aide for AP Seminar students, under guidance of Ms. Thomas.

Her physical fitness consisted of competitive club swimming. With practices held 2-4 hours a day and accumulating to over 18 hours per week, she was able to achieve over 2200 hours over 3 years. With rigorous training and mental health conditioning, this activity served as character development in maintaining perseverance.

Her personal development consisted of enhancing her reading comprehension skills. With her ongoing research of a particular abduction case in North Korea, she regularly read articles that were above her proficiency levels. She additionally delved into her favorite genre of dystopian books to accumulate a total of 201 hours.

Her expedition/exploration consisted of traveling to Hiroshima, Japan to explore the cultural aspects of her heritage. From booking the flight tickets, managing Japanese Railroad (JR) accommodations, to finding activities that were low-cost, she was able to plan the two week trip with full financial responsibility. Although she ran into multiple problems in transportation and language fluency, she was able to travel to over 15 different locations in discovering foods, temples, landscapes, and architecture. This trip allowed her to re-discover her admiration for the culture that she belonged to, and spend time with her loving grandparents in Japan.

Congratulations to Momoka and her great mentor Mrs. Nourse on this success!
